LDS Art by Boyd K. Packer - "The Earth Shall Teach Thee"

Boyd K. Packer, president of the quorum of the twelve apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has spent his life not only serving the Lord by fulfilling various callings, but in developing his talent as an artist. His works can now be found in the newly published, "The Earth Shall Teach Thee", available from Deseret Book. The book comes with a companion DVD of President and Sister Packer talking about the artwork and their various experiences and lessons learned.

LDS Art - "Forget Me Not"

Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf, second counselor in the First Presidency of the LDS church, spoke in the Relief Society General Meeting of the 2011 General Conference about a beautiful flower: the forget me not. His talk, entitled "Forget Me Not" reminded women in the church to be patient with themselves, find happiness now, remember the Lord's love for them and other wonderful counsel. Liz Lemon Swindle, renowned LDS artist, created a beautiful piece of LDS art, also entitled "Forget Me Not" that captures the forget me not flower and the message given by Elder Uchtdorf.

LDS Art by Greg Olsen - Scenes of the Savior

My husband and I attended a presentation by Greg Olsen yesterday. He showed his artwork, told stories from when some of the paintings were created, and bore his testimony of the Savior. He has a strong desire that the Savior become real and personal to people, and he seeks to achieve that in his Savior art. He not only captured biblical scenes, but drew contemporary scenes of individuals in various walks of life sitting with the Savior. We got to see his new and even yet unnamed paintings that were quite breathtaking. We exchanged business cards with him, and his website is gregolsen.com.

LDS Art Toy Figures from the LDS Friend

This year, the LDS Friend is featuring cut out scripture figures and 10 of the 12 issues. You can cut them out and mount them on cardstock, cardboard, or popsicle sticks. I cut them out and paste them on thin cardboard, and cover them with packing tape to make them last longer. I also look in the back page of Ensign issues and past friend issues for pictures where the character could be cut out. We have quite a collection now and my son loves to play with them. I tell him the stories, then I hear him acting them out. One time I overheard him say, "I'm Joseph Smith and I'm teaching you the gospel," to his sister!

New LDS Art - Simon Dewey "O My Father"

I was reading the April 2012 edition of the LDS Ensign, and on page 40 is an article entitled, "The Atonement by Elder David A. Bednar. The featured painting I recognized immediately as being one of Simon Dewey's as his style is unique, but I do not remember seeing the painting before. It depicts the Savior in the Garden of Gethsamane, and it gives a closer view of the Savior's face and gives you a sense of the emotion he might have been feeling. It is a beautiful piece of LDS Art.  Today, "O My Father" is featured on the LDS Ensign homepage.
